Cori Gauff v Elise Mertens Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two and Gauff has won them both. They have never faced off in a hardcourt competition though.

That, combined with the fact that Gauff is probably one of the biggest title contenders to win the 2023 US Open meant that Andreeva was left with no chances.
Gauff needed just an hour and 18 minutes to scythe past Andreeva, winning 6-3, 6-2 and moving to the third round of this tournament for the second season running.
Having struggled against Laura Siegemund in the first round, Gauff was broken in the very first game of the encounter but from that moment onward it was one way traffic. The American broke Andreeva in the very next game and then again in the fourth game to run away with the encounter.
The second set was an even more one-sided affair as Gauff closed things out quickly after that.
She will now face a bit of a challenge from the fighting Mertens but given the respective players’ form, she starts off a whopping 1/7 (with bet365) favourite in this one.

Mertens Saves Match-Points against Collins
Mertens hasn’t been in too much form in recent times but she has been able to maintain a healthy 32nd rank on the WTA charts thanks to her solid showings in the first half of the season.
In fact it was at the French Open earlier this May that she last won two matches in a row – made it three in three to reach the fourth round.
Coming into the US Open, Mertens was on the verge of losing early again, having not won successive matches in five previous tournaments. She had scraped past Mirjam Bjorklund in the first round and then looked to be up against the wall when she fell a set behind and then faced match-points in the second set tie-breaker against Danielle Collins.
Mertens fought back to level things out and then clinched the win 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1 to oust Collins and seal her third round spot for the fifth time in six attempts.
