De Minaur Makes Quick Work of Wu

World no. 13 Alex de Minaur made quick work of China’s Wu Yibing in the second round of the US Open on Thursday to keep marching on in the tournament.

The Aussie, who was a quarterfinalist in 2020, will be making a fifth third round appearance in what is his seventh main draw at the US Open.

Dominating the match from the start, De Minaur dropped just 15 points on his serve in the entire match. He faced just one break point which he saved, while he held 18 break points, capitalising on seven of those chances.

It was a breeze for de Minaur, who needed just an hour and 27 minutes to win the match 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

The Aussie had begun his campaign with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Skatov, Timofey.

He had come into the tournament in good form, having finished runner-up in back-to-back tournaments in Los Cabos and Toronto earlier this month. In all he has played in four finals this season, which includes another runner-up finish in Queen’s. However, he had won his seventh career title, when he won the final in Acapulco.

Can he reach the fourth round for a third time at Flushing Meadows?

Jarry Rallies Past Michelsen

Chile’s Nicolas Jarry marched into the third round of the US Open for the first time in his career after he rallied from a set down to beat promising American Alex Michelsen in the second round on Thursday.

The world no. 25 served 12 aces and struck 42 winners in the match. He saved 6 of 9 break points and converted 6 of 11 to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

It was the second straight match that Jarry won in four sets. He had beaten Luca Van Assche 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round, serving 29 aces in that match.

With the two wins, Jarry improved his season record to 29-13 at the tour level. He has won two titles this year, in Santiago and Geneva and also reached a maiden fourth round in a major at Roland Garros.

Can he upset De Minaur in the next round and clinch a second round of 16 spot in a Grand Slam?
