Mai Hontama v Arianne Hartono Head to Head

They have faced off just once before this and that came about as recently as the 2023 US Open qualifiers in which Hartono won in straight sets.

Hontama Dismisses Podoroska

Despite being ranked 176th in the world and taking on a player who is 71st on the WTA charts, Hontama had no difficulties in wrapping up a win and making it to the quarterfinal.

Having overcome a bagel at the hands of Su Jeong Jang in the first round, Hontama conjured up a crushing win over Podoroska to enter the last eight much like she had done in Stanford in a WTA 125 tournament.

Hontama needed nearly an hour and a half and dropped her serve just once before grabbing the victory. Up two breaks of serves, Hontama failed to wrap it up at 5-1, was broken at 5-2 and broke her opponent for the third time in the set to grab the lead.

In the second, she saved two break-points after having taken a 3-1 lead and did not look back after that to clinch a 6-3, 6-3 win.

She starts out a 3/5 favourite here with bet365.

Hartono Routs Udvardy

Needing a couple of qualifying wins to make it to the main draw of this competition, Hartono was pushed to a three-setter by local player Misaki Doi in the first round. She came through that and has now routed Panna Udvardy in the second round to move up the rankings ladder.

Once ranked 156th in the world, Hartono was on court for just an hour as she shrugged off an early break of serve to clinch a 6-2, 6-0 win. She broke Udvardy a whopping six times in the match.

Hartono has a lot to play for in this match as far as her rankings are concerned. Having begun the tournament ranked 191st, a victory here could take her to the top 150 on the WTA charts – better than her previous best.

That being said, she will be up against a player who is a local and in some sterling form making it easy to understand why Hartono starts off a 7/5 underdog here with bet365.

Hontama v Hartono Prediction and Tip

Hontama can be expected to clinch this but we could see a three-setter here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5 (with bet365)
