World no. 13 Barbora Krejcikova scored a second straight sets win in the tournament on Thursday to reach a third semifinal of the season.
The last two times the Czech reached the final four stage, she went on to win those matches and reach the finals. While Kejcikova won the title in Dubai to clinch her maiden WTA 1000 title and sixth WTA title, she finished runner-up in Birmingham.
The fourth seed began her campaign in San Diego with a 6-3, 6-2 second round win over Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.
On Thursday, she got a second win of the tournament as she knocked out Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-3.
Broken twice in the match by the Brazilian, Krejcikova dominated the contest from the start. She got two breaks of serve early in both the sets, which helped her take control of the match.
The Czech out-aced the world no. 20, 6-0. She saved 5 of 7 break points and converted half of 10 to win the match in an hour and 43 minutes.

Collins Breezes Past Garcia
After rallying from a set down to beat Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16, world no. 43 Danielle Collins handed Caroline Garcia a straight sets rout in the quarterfinal on Thursday to reach her second semifinal of the season.
The American had earlier made it to the final four stage in Austin, only to fall to eventual champion Marta Kostyuk.
Collins looked in supreme control on Thursday as she picked up her second top 10 win of the season, following her win over Maria Sakkari at the Canadian Open.
A two-time tour level champion, Collins did not face a single break point against Garcia and converted 4 of 5 to beat the world no. 10, 6-2, 6-3.
A semifinalist last year as well, Collins had begun this year’s campaign with a 7-5, 6-0 win over compatriot Louisa Chirico in the first round. She had needed an hour and 49 minutes to beat Ostapenko 6 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16.
