Kenin Routs Potapova

2020 Australian Open champion stormed into the semifinals in San Diego with a straight sets drubbing of Anastasia Potapova in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The world no. 93 Kenin dominated the first set by breaking the Russian twice. She also got a break in the very first game of the second set, but soon found herself trailing 1-3 as Potapova got a double break durig a three-game win streak.

Kenin was quick to stop Potapova’s comeback bid and the American won the next five games in a row to win the one hour and 18 minute contest 6-2, 6-3.

The 24-year-old is into the second semifinal of the season. Earlier she had lost in the semis of the Hobart Open.

Kenin had begun her San Diego campaign by beating the sixth seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. She then rebounded from a set down to beat Katie Volynets 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Kenin, a five-time tour-level champion, is now 21-16 across levels this year. She will be looking to reach an eighth tour level final and a first since the runner-up finish at the French Open in 2020.

Navarro Stuns Sakkari

World no. 61 Emma Navarro stunned the third seed Maria Sakkari to reach her second tour level semifinal of the season.

Navarro, who was a semifinalist in Bad Homburg, improved to 50-20 across levels this year. Most of her wins this season have come in lower level tournaments. While she reached her maiden WTA 125 final in Bastad, she won three of five ITF finals this year.

In San Diego, Navarro had qualified for the main draw with dominating wins over Yasmine Kabbaj and Iryna Shymanovich respectively.

She carried that form into the main draw, beating Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-0 in the first round and Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 16.

On Thursday, Navarro scored her first top 10 win, beating the world no. 9 Sakkari in a gripping three-set contest.

After edging the first set, Navarro could win just nine points in the second as Sakkari made a resounding comeback by bageling the American. The third set saw both players trade a break in the middle of the set, before Navarro went on to dominate the tiebreak to register a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
