Hunter Eyeing Rare Singles Win

Storm Hunter is predominantly a doubles player, and she’s very good at it. Singles can be good at times, but for the most part, she’s not really hit a huge peak there. She plays it every now and then and holds a 23-14 record so far this year. This event is one of those where she can try and do something more, considering how depleted the draw is.

She got a pretty fair 1st round matchup, so expect her to show up with some urgency against a player she should technically bat. She hasn’t played that well lately, losing three matches in a row, but she mostly played players far better than her next opponent. Hunter likes to play aggressively; she’s pretty good from the baseline.

The conditions in Guadalajara can be tough to get used to because the court is quite bouncy, and the ball tends to fly quickly. She didn’t play last year, but neither did her opponent, so it’s not likely to be a huge issue.

Basically, it will come down to who has a better day, as they’re a pretty close matchup-up, but I still deem Hunter the far better player.

Shymanovich Hoping To Surprise

Irina Shymanovich doesn’t get many chances to play a WTA 1000 event, especially one in which she entered the main draw without having to play the qualifiers. It’s a huge chance for her to get some good points, and there is some optimism.

She’s had a fairly decent year so far with a 32-19 score, holding a 12-8 score on hard courts as well. Her form has been shaky lately, but there are some good wins in there, such as the ones against Katrina Scott in San Diego recently. The conditions will need some adjusting, but she can get it done as she faces a player who is prone to spam quite a few balls wide.

She will need to produce her best effort, though, as Hunter will find a rhythm eventually, so how she handles that will determine the match. If she finds an antidote, she’ll likely win, but I’m not so sure about that.

Hunter v Shymanovich Prediction and Tip

I simply think that Hunter is the better player overall I expect her to win. It’s going to be close and don’t be surprised if it goes to three sets but I think the Australian wins in the end.
