Kristina Mladenovic v Cristina Bucsa Head to Head

They played once before and Bucsa won that match on clay last year.

Mladenovic Having A Bad Year

Kristina Mladenovic hasn’t played near her peak for a while, but even at her standards, this has been a rather poor year. She played most of her matches away from the WTA Tour and still posted only a 16-24 record, which is not very good. She’s 13-9 on hard courts, but that’s hardly a consolation prize.

Her last good outing came in Brasilia, which was an ITF Tour event that barely had any known tennis player, and she made it only to the quarter-final. It’s pretty clear that her tennis is not very good right now, and I don’t see it changing in Guadalajara.

She didn’t play at the event last year, and this is not a place where you adjust easily. It plays rather differently than some other events, so I expect her to struggle in this one as well. The serve will need to be on point, and if it isn’t, this will likely be a very long day for the former doubles champion.

Bucsa Favoured to Win

Cristina Bucsa is not some world-beating tennis player, but she’s played most of her matches on the WTA Tour this year. Compared to Mladenovic, she’s shown a better level both overall and recently.

The Spaniard is not bad on hard courts either, holding a 14-10 record this year which is a better score she has on clay; a surface she’s more used to. Like her opponent, Bucsa didn’t play in Guadalajara before, but somehow, I don’t think that will bother her too much. She has a very attacking style of play that is prone to errors but Mladenovic isn’t that much more consistent either.

She didn’t play that well at the US Open but showed a solid level in Chicago so bringing that level to Guadalajara will certainly see her win a few matches.

I see her beating Mladenovic comfortably to get this campaign underway. She’s just a better player right now.

Mladenovic v Bucsa Prediction and Tip

As I said above, I think Bucsa has played better both overall this year and more recently. I also think she’s a better player than Mladenovic so I’m backing the Spaniard to win.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Bucsa to win in straight sets: 5/6 (with bet365)
