Moyuka Uchijima is a solid player but perhaps not one for the highest heights in tennis. She did really well to secure a spot in the main draw of the event by beating two solid players in straight sets without any issues. The Japanese player doing well in this part of the calendar should not be surprised, as she was just in Osaka playing well and gaining confidence.
That will obviously carry over, and it did, so her cruising through the qualifiers wasn’t a surprise. Things will be a bit more complicated in the main draw as she’s facing a player whom she has never beaten before, though they only played one match.
Uchijima is a solid hard court player. Most of her career wins have come on that surface, but her opponent is a solid player on the surface again. Whether she wins will largely depend on how much her confidence carries her.
Much like other regular players, it all comes down to how she feels, and doubt is never far away. If she can keep up the high spirits, she might win the match simply based on form.

Ponchet Enters As a Lucky Loser
Unlike her opponent, Ponchet lost in this event’s qualifiers but entered the main draw as a lucky loser. She’s a solid player, though not one who played much on the highest level of tennis. She has a 32-21 record on the year, one that is better than her opponent, but her form hasn’t been quite as good lately.
She earned a really solid win in Osaka but then lost easily in the next round. Whether or not she wins will largely come down to how she plays that day. Her best will be enough to win, but it’s not guaranteed.
It’s a very close matchup, though she won easily the last time they played. I kind of have a feeling that she might win again simply because the odds favour her as well, but Uchijima kind of played better last week in Japan.
That might matter in this one as well, as so much in tennis comes down to form and confidence.
