Jiri Vesely v Lloyd Harris Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 30 year old Czech, and the South African, who is four years younger.

Vesely Playing Off Protected Ranking

Vesely is playing off a Protected Ranking after missing nine months of action through injury, only returning in time for this year’s French Open.

Prior to his lay-off he had twice been a winner on the ATP tour, and he made the final in Dubai in February last year.

It has taken him a little time to shake off the rust and find his rhythm again, and after losing in the second round of Wimbledon, he had a series of largely disappointing results on the Challenger tour.

But he will have taken great encouragement from his performances at the US Open, where he reached the third round for the first time, courtesy of victories in two five set matches.

First he beat the qualifier Enzo Couacaud of France, before ousting the world number 21 Francisco Cerundulo of Argentina.

Borna Gojo of Croatia ended his run, and this will be his first match since that defeat.

Harris Knows All About Injuries

Harris knows all about injuries, having suffered more than his own fair share.

He missed the second half of last season after undergoing surgery on his right wrist.

His return came in Melbourne earlier this year, so he is more advanced in his comeback than the Czech.

In June he got the reward for all the hard work he had put in getting back to fitness, winning his first senior title in the doubles on grass in Mallorca.

It was also in that event that he had his best singles’ run in any event since his return to the tour, not only qualifying but going on to reach the semi-finals before losing to the eventual winner Christopher Eubanks.

Like Vesely, his last competitive action was at the US Open, where he defeated Guido Pella in the first round before Carlos Alcaraz beat him comfortably in straight sets.

Vesely v Harris Prediction and Tip

Although their current world rankings might disguise it, both were top 40 players before their respective injury lay-offs. Harris is further into his recovery than the Czech, though, and that may give him the edge in what promises to be a close match.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Harris to win: 5/7 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 31.5 games in the match: 5/4 (with bet365)
