Xiyu Wang v Viktoria Hruncakova Head to Head

They have played on three occasions within the last five years. Wang leads 3-0. The most recent of which was three weeks ago in the first round of the US Open. Wang clinched it 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Wang Looks to be in Good Form

The 22-year-old from China, won her first two rounds in straight sets: beating Nadia Podoroska and Diana Shnaider.

Against Shnaider, the first set was closely contested, but Wang held serve with relative ease and eventually broke to go 5-4 up. At deuce on her serve, she closed out the set with some impressive ball striking under pressure.

The second set was very much a similar story, with Wang once again breaking at 4-4. However, this time she squandered three match points and gave the break straight back. Putting any disappointment aside, Wang regathered herself and broke again. Two errors from Shnaider, followed by two aces, wrapped up the match in straight sets.

Impressive serving has been a feature throughout both her matches. Her first serve percentage for the tournament is close to 70% and she has racked up a total of nine aces. If she can continue this, it certainly limits what any opponent can do.

Wang goes into this match as the bookies favourite, with odds at 3/10 (with bet365). Aside from her only marginally overcoming Hruncakova a few weeks ago, it is hard to find a compelling reason as to why she should lose this match.

Tough Task Ahead of Hruncakova

Hruncakova has made good use of her lucky loser spot and finds herself in her second WTA 250 quarter-final of the year.

Her first and second round matches have been far from easy victories. She defeated Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3 in the first round and similarly edged past Chinese wildcard Yue Yuan 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4.

Including her two qualifying matches, Hruncakova has been on court for over nine hours in the last four days; not to mention the challenging conditions. This is quite the contrast to Wang’s route through to the quarterfinals, who didn’t come through qualifying and spent just under three hours on court.

If Hruncakova can replicate her quick start to the match, as she did in New York, then she may be in for a chance. Otherwise, Wang may run away with a victory.

Wang v Hruncakova Prediction and Tip

Given their head to head record and both player’s routes through to the quarterfinals, I predict Wang to win once again. The odds for her winning may not be great, but it is probably your best bet.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Wang to win: 3/10 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Wang to win in straight sets: 5/6 (with bet365)
