World no. 27 Magda Linette moved into the quarterfinal with a straight sets win over Australia’s Daria Saville in the second round on Wednesday.
The Polish player, who is seeded no. 1 in the tournament, needed two hours and five minutes to hold off the world no. 264, 6-0, 7-6 (7-0).
While in the first set, Linette saved two of two break points before bagelling the Aussie, she got broken twice in the second set, but she stayed on serve before going on to blank Saville in the second set and winning the contest.
Linette, who reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open this year, improved her season record to 23-21 across levels.
This is just a third time that Linette has reached the quarterfinal this year and a win on Thursday will put her in a second semifinal of 2023.
Linette also had a tough time winning her first round match, as she rallied from a set down to beat Jodie Anna Burrage 6-7, 6-0, 6-2.

Masarova Saves 5 Match Points Before Beating Golubic
Playing Linette will be Rebeka Masarova, who saved five match points in the final set before clinching a stunning three-set win over Viktorija Golubic.
Masarova had dominated the first set, but she lost the second set after conceding the only break early in the set.
In the third, it was Golubic who got a break in the fifth game and then held three match points on Masarova’s serve in the ninth game. But Masarova was up to her task as she saved all three match points and then broke the Swiss in the next to send the match into the deciding set tiebreak.
The world no. 64 then saved two more match points in the tiebreak before winning the contest 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7).
Masarova had won her opening round match 7-5, 6-2 against Kateryna Baindl.
The world no. 64 improved her season record to 34-20 across levels. She had reached her maiden WTA final in Auckland this year and also featured in an ITF final.
