Taro Daniel v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the French Open earlier this year in which Daniel routed O’Connell in straight sets.

Daniel Makes a Comeback Win in Opener

With nothing to choose between the two players, it looked like even the bookmakers were confused who between Daniel and Aleksandar Vukic started out a favourite. And that’s exactly how the match panned out too with Daniel having to come back from being a set down to register a win.

Daniel, who has slipped down the rankings chart from his career-best ranking of 64 to his current 95th, had entered the tournament on the back of a first round exit at the US Open. He had been forced to play the qualifiers there, another indicator how he has struggled to get going in recent times.

And when he lost his serve twice in the opening set to fall behind, it looked like the writing was on the wall.

Fortunately for Daniel, he did to his opponent in the second set what he had endured in the first, breaking him twice too, before racing off to an easy win in the third.

Can he now continue with the same run as he faces a trickier opponent in O’Connell who is around 40 places ahead of him. Daniel is 1/1 to win this with bet365.

O’Connell Stretched by 319th-Ranked Player

O’Connell might not have expected to be taken to the limits by Alibek Kachmazov after having started out a 1/6 favourite in his opener. That’s how things turned out though with the Aussie needing two hours and 10 minutes to clinch a straight-set win.

In fact, with a little more luck, Kachmazov could well have pushed it into a decider and from that point onward it could have been anyone’s match.

Where O’Connell struggled was his inability to close out the games after getting a plethora of break-points. In the first set itself, he had a break-point in the first three games that his opponent served in but it took him a tie-breaker to grab the lead.

In the second, while O’Connell broke early, he lost his serve twice to give Kachmazov a 3-2 lead. The Aussie broke right back but was forced to save two more break-points at 4-4 before clicnhing the spot in the second round with a final break of serve in the 10th game.

bet365 now offering 8/11 for his win here but he will need to do a lot better than his opener to win this.

Daniel v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

This is another of those difficult ones to call on the basis of what happened in the previous round. We think, however, on hardcourts, it’s O’Connell who holds a bit of an advantage.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: O’Connell to win: 8/11 (with bet365)
