Maria Sakkari v Caroline Dolehide Head to Head

Sakkari and Dolehide have never faced off before this.

Sakkari Ends Garcia’s Run

On paper, Sakkari and Caroline Garcia were two closely-matched opponents. But they had one other thing in common other than being top-10 players and that was the kind of struggles they had seen in recent times.

Both Sakkari and Garcia had made it to the top five through some excellent and consistent performances last season. A year on, neither player was even in the top 15 of the WTA Race to the Finals rankings. Which is why a semifinal appearance for both these players was a marked improvement in their form this year

In the end, it was Sakkari who turned out to be better player on the day, with the 3/5 favourite (with bet365) clinching her place in the final with a crushing 6-3, 6-0 win over Garcia. The match lasted a mere hour and 12 minutes.

Sakkari faced a break-point in the very first game of the match and three more in the second set but held on to her serve. In return she broke Garcia four times to scoop up the encounter and with it, her first finals appearance since the Washington Open.

What’s interesting to note is that Sakkari last won a WTA title in 2019 and that has been her only career one. This is a brilliant chance for her to double that tally.

Dolehide Shocks Kenin

Despite starting out an 11/4 underdog (at bet365) going into her semifinal against the in-form Sofia Kenin, Dolehide managed to find a way to clinch a straight-set win over her opponent.

And in doing so, she also made it to her maiden WTA final, having also never gone beyond the third round of a WTA 1000 before this.

Dolehide, who will move into the top 50 of the WTA Rankings from her current 111th in the world irrespective of the result of this final, overcame a 2-4 deficit in the first set and a 1-3 one in the second to win 7-5, 6-3. The match took an hour and 26 minutes.

The 25-year-old American had already sent out upcoming star Peyton Stearns in the first round, taken three sets to get past Sachia Vickery, shocked Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 6-2 in the third before her comeback-from-behind win over Martina Trevisan in the quarterfinal.

Can she now stop Sakkari from winning her maiden title since 2019? More vitally can she win her own maiden WTA tournament?

Sakkari v Dolehide Prediction and Tip

Sakkari might start off a favourite but there will be a lot of nerves going into it for her against a player who has nothing to lose but at the same time won’t give up so easily. Expecting Dolehide to put up a show here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Dolehide to win a set – Yes: 1/2 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
