Kudermetova Gets Opening Bye

Despite being ranked 16th in the world, Kudermetova earned a first round bye here and that was thanks to her performance at the Tokyo Open last week.

The Russian had defeated Iga Swiatek on her way to winning the title there, which also included victories over Jessica Pegula and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. That Kudermetova managed to get past Swiatek and Pegula in the same tournament is a biggie in itself but more so when one considers what had happened before that.

Kudermetova had gone into that tournament with just three wins from her previous nine matches after having returned from a fitness concern at the Berlin Open.

With that kind of form under her belt, not too many expected Kudermetova to get past both Kayla Day and Harriet Dart in the first two rounds there, let alone the highly pedigreed Swiatek and Pegula.

Which is also why Kudermetova starts off a heavy favourite here despite facing someone who is still a top-50 player.

Tsurenko Returns After US Open With a Win

Lin Zhu had gone into her first round match against Tsurenko as a 3/5 favourite with bet365 but it looked like she wasn’t at her full fitness.

And Tsurenko took full advantage of that as she ran off to a 6-0, 3-0 lead in a mere 43 minutes in her opener. It was at this stage that Zhu retired from the encounter, leaving Tsurenko an easy winner and with a berth next to Kudermetova.

Tsurenko lost a mere six points on her own serve while breaking her opponent five times from the seven opportunities she got.

She had come into this tournament on the back of a second round exit at the US Open and having not played for nearly a month meant she probably would have had a difficult time had Zhu been fully fit.

Her real test will come against Kudemetova now who enters this tournament with some stunning results going for her.

Kudermetova v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Backing Kudermetova to continue with her winning streak as she looks to return to her previous best ranking of ninth in the world. A straight-set win looks likely.
