Jessica Pegula v Anna Blinkova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in Charleston earlier this year with Pegula winning 6-2, 6-0.

Pegula Hoping to Continue Solid Form

Pegula enters this tournament in a bit of a bitter-sweet sense about her.

She has been doing well in the initial rounds of most competitions this season, a part of the reason why she hit a career-best ranking of third in the world recently and has settled in at fourth.

However, Pegula has won just one title in the season – it came in a WTA 1000 competition in Montreal – and only three in her career. Surely she would have liked to do a lot more.

What would have irked her a little was the manner in which she made the final of the Tokyo Open in the lead-up to this tournament, winning against Daria Kasatkina and Maria Sakkari in the process but then lost in the final.

That defeat came at the hands of Veronika Kudermetova who had gone into that encounter at 7/3 odds (at bet365) to surprise Pegula. And surprise is what the Russian did in straight sets. Pegula had a first round bye here and will start a heavy favourite in the second.

Blinkova Shocks Vekic

Donna Vekic has had the time of her career this season but as the year is drawing to a close her struggles have begun to mount. And Blinkova took full toll of that as she stunned the 1/2 favourite (at bet365) Vekic in straight sets in their opener.

She beat Vekic 6-3, 7-5 in a match lasting an hour and 34 minutes.

The Russian herself hasn’t been in any sort of form in recent times though. Since making the third round at Wimbledon she had won just two of the nine matches she had played at the highest level.

Defeats to the likes of Clervie Ngounoue, Lin Zhu, Jodie Burrage and Linda Fruhvirtova would not have gone down well for her.

Blinkova now faces one of her biggest recent challenges and not surprisingly will start off a second favourite at 6/1.

Pegula v Blinkova Prediction and Tip

Backing Pegula to win this in straight sets even as she looks to recover from her quick turnaround time between the Tokyo Open and the start of this competition.
