Liudmilla Samsonova v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between them including two in the qualifiers and one as recently as the Washington Open. All three have been won by Samsonova.

Samsonova v Kostyuk Match Winning Odds*

Samsonova Sends Kvitova Away

Interestingly, Samsonova had gone into her second round match against Kvitova as a 7/10 favourite despite being ranked lower than her opponent. This might have to do with Kvitova’s recent struggles but either ways, Samsonova played like a favourite and carved out a straight-set win over the two-time Wimbledon winner.

Ranked 22nd in the world, Samsonova needed an hour and 36 minutes and four breaks of serves to send Kvitova packing from the tournament.

Having defeated Alycia Parks in the first round, also in straight sets, Samsonova was quick off the blocks as she broke Kvitova in the very first game of the encounter. While Kvitova levelled out at 3-3, Samsonova broke her opponent yet again in the very next game before clinching the set off her third set-point.

In the second set, they traded early breaks of serves and while things went on serve for the next eight games, Samsonova always looked like she held the upper hand. That fructified in the 11th game with a second break after which Samsonova finished things off.

She now has a very good chance of making the quarterfinal of a WTA 1000 event, her second for the season after the Canadian Open.

Kostyuk Shocks Jabeur

Ons Jabeur might not have been at her best over the last one month or so because of possible fitness-related concerns but she looked to have shrugged those off with a title win in Ningbo last week.

She had followed that up with a first round win here to make it six victories in a row but in a shock result, Kostyuk stopped her right in her tracks.

In a second round match that lasted a mere hour and 18 minutes, Kostyuk defeated Jabeur 7-6 (5), 6-1 to enter the third round.

Having won in three sets against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round, Kostyuk was down an early break and for the most part it looked like Jabeur would go on to seal the opening set with ease. Down 4-5, Kostyuk then broke Jabeur and in the tie-breaker that followed, stunned the crowd with three set-points. She took the lead off the third one.

The two traded breaks of serves in the early part of the second set but Kostyuk then went on a rampage, breaking Jabeur three more times in a row to finish off the match in double-quick time.

Can she now repeat the same showing against Samsonova?

Samsonova v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

While Kostyuk stunned Jabeur in the second round it’s difficult to see her play those levels again on successive days and against a player who reeks of high pedigree herself. Backing Samsonova to take this in straight sets.
