This is the first encounter between the two players on the ATP Tour.
Djokovic Starts with a Tricky Win
Having enjoyed a bye into the second round, Novak Djokovic started his campaign in Monte Carlo with a three-set win over Philipp Kohlschreiber. It wasn’t a match that was reminiscent of Djokovic’s usual clinical plays where he downs his opponents in straight sets.
Nonetheless, he got the much-needed win here and is now through to the third round. Following his sensational victory in the Australian Open, he moved on to lose early in Indian Wells and Miami Masters, respectively to Kohlschreiber and Roberto Bautista Agut.
In his last three appearances in Monte Carlo, the Serbian cyborg has never made it past the quarterfinal. Last year, he lost right in the third round – something he will hope to avoid repeating this time around too.
Fritz Marches On
The 21-year-old American has delivered one of the best performances of his season so far. His third round run here marks only the third time that Fritz has achieved a feat like this.
In the opening match, he moved past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and later, he defeated Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. The last time we saw something like this happen was in the Australian Open, where he lost in the third round to Roger Federer.
Since then, he won the Newport Beach Challenger although, after that, his form took a sharp hit and he lost his opening matches in all of the subsequent ATP tournaments he participated in.
Djokovic v Fritz Predictions & Tips
This one is a no-brainer. Djokovic, despite his recent struggles with form, shouldn’t have any difficulties in moving past the inexperienced American. This match will serve as a learning curve for Fritz, who is getting a chance to compete with one of the greatest players on the tour right now.
