Gael Monfils v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

Both the players have not played each other in an ATP Tour match before and this will be the first time the pair of them clash.

Frenchman Monfils on a Good Run

Tall, athletic and powerful, one of the strongest forehands in the game and serve that can constantly clock above 220 KMPH, Gael Monfils was the next big thing in tennis almost a decade ago.

A French Open semi-final and Monte Carlo Masters Final appearance along with strong performances around the year got him into the top 10 rankings just at the age of 21 and it was just supposed to be a matter of time in many experts’ eyes before he won his first Grand Slam.

More than 10 years later, despite closing in on 500 career wins on the tour, Monfils has been a story of what if considering the sheer amount of talent he possessed.

Wrist, ankle, and Achilles’ injuries have disrupted his career time and again and Monfils holds the dubious record for retiring and giving walkovers to his opponents more time than anyone else who has played more than 300 matches on tour this decade.

Despite this his world ranking has never gone out of top 50 at any point in the last five years, his record this year has been 28-11 and he had a really impressive start to the season with title at Rotterdam, semifinal runs at Sofia and Dubai along with last-eight appearance at the Indian Wells.

At the latter Masters, a recurring Achilles issue forced him to afford a walkover to Dominic Thiem, once again at the Montreal Masters a strong run till the semifinals was halted when an ankle injury forced him to retire against Rafael Nadal.

His record on hard courts this year has been 13-3 and he comes into this clash with back to back straight-sets victories in the first two rounds and he will be hoping to continue his good run.

Shapovalov Coming Back to Form at the Right Time

For a 20-year-old, Shapovalov seems to have been around for a long time and sometimes people tend to forget that one trait of most young players has in their game is inconsistency and Shapovalov is no different. After a solid start to the season where he reached the semi-finals at the Miami Masters, the Israel born Canadian suffered a serious loss of form.

Seven out of his next nine tournaments saw him crashing out in the first round itself. Ranked at number 20 at the start of April, his loss of form meant that he wasn’t even a seed at the US Open. Ranked at 33 in the world, Shapovalov comes into the US Open on the back of a strong semi-final run at the Winston Salem Open and here too he has won both matches in straight sets.

His record this year has been 26-19 somewhat skewed by the horrendous run he was from April onward but he seems to have recovered some of his mojo and will be eager to continue his good run and reach the fourth round to equal his best performance at the flushing meadows from 2017.

Gael Monfils v Denis Shapovalov Predictions & Tips

On the relatively easier side of the draw, both the players will not want to miss out on this opportunity where they will not be facing a top 20 player in the next two rounds. Both the players will fancy their chances and I can see this match going the distance.

Tip: Five sets in the match: 11/5 (888Sport)
