Vekic Aiming for First Major Quarterfinal
23-year-old Donna Vekic looked in good touch as she downed the highly experienced Kaia Kanepi, of Estonia, 7-5, 6-3 to advance into the third round of the tournament.
The 23rd seed Vekic, who had beaten Richel Hogenkamp in the first round, has had a decent year so far. At the St. Petersburg Open (a Premier event) in February, the Croat reached the biggest final of her career only to fall short in the final hurdle against a determined Kiki Bertens, who rallied from 2-5 down in the first to win in straight sets.
Vekic also made it to the final of the Nottingham Open, but yet again lost after seizing early initiative, with Caroline Garcia taking the title after a hard-fought three-setter.
Having never gone past the fourth round of a Grand Slam and the third round of the U.S. Open, Vekic will be determined to leave an impact this year, but waiting ahead is an extremely tough opponent in Putintseva.

Putintseva’s Year Keeps Getting Better
One player who can claim to have Naomi Osaka’s number is Putintseva, who not only knocked out the defending U.S. Open champion in the first round of Wimbledon this year, but also put up a scintillating performance against the No. 1 in Birmingham.
The Kazakh, who has a 3-0 win-loss record against the Japanese star, is getting into a habit of lifting her game against better ranked players and got yet another big scalp at Flushing Meadows on Thursday, when she ousted No. 9 Aryna Sabalenka in the second round.
Having won the first set 6-3, the Kazakh looked in trouble in the second with the Belarusian racing to a 3-5 lead and even earning a set point, but Putintseva rallied to force the tie-breaker before winning the match 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Two-time French Open quarterfinalist Putintseva is in the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time, and the 24-year-old, who claimed her first WTA title earlier this year at the Nuremberg Cup, will back herself to enter the second week in New York.
