Frances Tiafoe v Kevin Anderson Head to Head

Anderson leads 3-1 head to head.

The South African won all three of their contests in 2018, winning the quarterfinal in New York, and Round-of-16 matches in Miami and Tokyo.

Tiafoe won at the Australian Open in 2019, taking the second round contest in four sets.

Mixed Start for Tiafoe

World No. 66 Frances Tiafoe of the U.S. comes to the tournament with a 4-4 record this year.

Starting off brightly at Delray Beach, where he won his only career title in 2018, Tiafoe ousted fellow Americans Donald Young and Bjorn Fratangelo in the first two rounds, before going down to Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the quarterfinals.

In Melbourne, the 23-year-old was beaten by Corentin Moutet in the first round of the Murray River Open, before he snapped a two-match losing streak with an opening-round win over Italy’s Stefano Travaglia in the Australian Open.

The 2019 Australian Open quarterfinalist, however, failed to make a deeper run this time, falling to eventual champion Novak Dokovic in the Round of 64.

In his next assignment at the Argentina Open, Tiafoe knocked out local hope Facundo Bagnis in straight sets, but fell to Spain’s Jaume Munar in the Round of 16.

At the Chile Open this week, Tiafoe withstood 29 aces from towering Czech Nicolas Jarry before finally seeing him off in three sets, all of which needed tie-breaks to separate the two. But inconsistency remained an issue for the former World No. 29, as Bagnis avenged his Buenos Aires defeat with a straight sets second round win over Tiafoe.

Having finished 2018 with a winning 28-27 record, that included a title at Delray Beach and a runner-up finish in Estoril, Tiafoe has had two consecutive seasons with more losses than wins. In 2019, he was 23-27, while in the pandemic-hit 2020, he ended with a 9-11 record.

Anderson Looking For Consistency

Playing the aggressive American in the first round will be veteran South African Kevin Anderson, who is 2-2 from two events this year.

The 34-year-old, who was 10-10 in 2020, began the 2021 season in Melbourne-1, winning his first two matches against Feliciano Lopez and Cedric-Marcel Stebe, before falling to Karen Khachanov in the Round of 16.

At the Australian Open, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini ousted the 6’8” South African in straight sets.

On Monday, Anderson will be playing his first tournament since that first round exit from the Melbourne slam.

A six-time champion on the tour, Anderson won his last title in Pune in 2019. The South African, who finished runner-up at the U.S. Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2018, has featured in 19 career finals, two of which were in Acapulco. In 2014, he lost a closely contested final to Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov; while in 2018, he missed out on a second opportunity to win the Mexican Open, going down to Juan Martin Del Potro.

Tiafoe v Anderson Prediction and Tip

Anderson holds the edge head to head, and he will like to improve on that record; Tiafoe, meanwhile won the most recent battle and he would like to remind the South African about that match. Expect a close contest with the match going the distance.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
