Karen Khachanov v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 24-year-old Russian and the 21-year-old Aussie.

Khachanov Looking to Build on Decent Start

World No. 22 Karen Khachanov will begin his Dubai campaign in the second round on Tuesday, after the eighth seed was awarded a first-round bye.

A four-time champion on the tour, Khachanov has had a decent start to the year, reaching a semifinal, two quarterfinals and the third round of the Australian Open from his first four tournaments and comes to Dubai with an 8-4 record.

Beginning the season at the Great Ocean Road Open, the 24-year-old aggressive baseliner defeated Australia’s Max Purcell, South Africa’s Kevin Anderson and the Netherlands’ Botic Van de Zandschulp en route to the semifinal, before falling to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in three.

At the Australian Open, Khachanov continued his good form, beating Aleksander Vukic and Richard Berankis in the first two rounds to enter the Round of 32 for the third consecutive year but was denied a spot in the Round of 16 yet again, this time by Matteo Berrettini, who came out on top despite playing through abdominal pain.

In Rotterdam, Khachanov got another tournament off to a great start, knocking out the eighth seed Stan Wawrinka in the first round and Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the next to reach the last eight, before falling to No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The 6’6” Russian’s last tournament was in Marseille last week, where he ousted Mackenzie McDonald in the Round of 16 after receiving a first-round bye, but faltered in the quarterfinal against Australia’s Matthew Ebden.

Both his quarterfinal exits in Rotterdam and Marseille, saw him clinch the first set, before losing the next two, an issue he would be hoping to fix soon.

Yet to lose a final, Khachanov, who was 20-15 last year, has won four ATP titles, including a Masters 1000 in Paris. He will be desperate to add another soon having not won one since 2018.

Popyrin Powers Past Novak

Facing Khachanov in the second round will be Australia’s Alexei Popyrin, who began his campaign on Monday with a first-round win over Austria’s Dennis Novak.

The Aussie, who comes into the tournament having captured the Singapore Open title last month, served 10 aces against Novak on his way to a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win in an hour and 34 minutes.

The win improved the 6’5” Popyrin to 8-2 this year.

Ranked 86th in the world, the 21-year-old right-hander began the season by reaching the Round of 16 of the Murray River Open after winning his first two matches and then edged out David Goffin in the first round of the Australian Open after a five-set thriller. He also forced a fifth set against South Africa’s Lloyd Harris in the next round before bowing out of his home slam.

The Aussie next featured at the Singapore Open, where he begun with a straight sets win over Christopher Eubanks, before needing three to dispatch Adrian Andreev in the next round. In the quarterfinal, he beat fellow Australian Matthew Ebden, and followed it up with a shock win over Marin Cilic in the semifinal, setting up a final against Alexander Bublik.

The Kazakh drew first blood in the final taking a one-set-to-nil lead, but Popyrin made a resounding comeback, bageling him in the second and then closing out the match in the third to capture his maiden ATP title.

Khachanov v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Popyrin has got better with every match this season and comes into the contest on a six-match winning streak. Expect him to go toe-to-toe with the Russian.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
