Alja Tomljanovic v Renata Zarazua Head to Head

This will be their second meeting on the women’s tour with Zarazua winning their previous clash on a slow clay court in Bogota in a third set tiebreak.

Tomljanovic Looking to Improve 2021 Record

Tomljanovic, the Australian-Croatian hasn’t had a very impressive year so far. Known for blowing hot and cold during her matches, she has so far compiled a 6-7 win/loss record in 2021. However, the 78th-ranked Tomljanovic has a fine 2-1 record on clay and that would surely give her some confidence ahead of her clash with Zarazua.

Tomljanovic was beaten by former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, when she last played a competitive match in Charleston last week. Stephens, who is a far better shot-maker than Tomljanovic dominated the proceedings from the word go as she notched up an excellent 6-3, 6-4 victory in the third round.

Overall, Tomljanovic has a 303-239 win/loss record. But, what would fill her with positivity is the fact that she has a fine 94-68 record on clay. This is quite surprising because Tomljanovic’s game isn’t suited for clay as she almost never changes the pace of the ball and likes to hit the ball extremely hard as well.

While, Tomljanovic may have been successful in stamping her authority over her opponents when she is playing exceptionally well, the aforementioned tactics hardly work on clay.

Zarazua Hoping to Continue Her Fine Run

Although Zarazua is not too experienced, she has created history by becoming the first Mexican woman to make it to the main draw of a Grand Slam since the 2000 Australian Open, when she progressed through to the second round of the French Open last year.

Moreover, Zarazua is entering the tournament after achieving her highest ranking of 141 on the WTA rankings. The last time she played, she was beaten by a consistent and rampaging Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets in the first round of the Charleston Open.

Unlike Tomljanovic, Zarazua has a decent 8-7 win/loss record in 2021, but has lost her only match on clay this year. Her best performance of the year came in W25 Orlando, where she reached the semifinals of the event.

Tomljanovic v Zarazua Prediction and Tip

Tomljanovic comes as a slight favourite starting out at 4/9 to achieve a victory in this encounter. With her aggressive style of play, she should be able to take control of this match from the very beginning.

Tip: Tomljanovic to win: 4/9 (bet365)
