Mihaela Buzărnescu v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Buzărnescu has won on each previous occasion. Two of those previous matches were on the junior tour, in Dobrich in Bulgaria, in 2011, and Izmir, Turkey in 2017, whilst their most recent meeting was at the Japan Open two years ago.

Three years ago, Buzãrnescu broke into the top 20 in singles, and she was also ranked 24 in doubles. Her decline since then, due to a combination of injury and loss of form has been rapid.

The Romanian, who reached the second round of the French Open before losing to Serena Williams was selected by her country to represent them at the Olympics. And she pulled off a  surprise in Tokyo by beating Alison Riske of the USA, the world number 37, in the first round, before she was beaten by the Czech Marketa Vondrousova, the woman who would go on to knock-out Naomi Osaka.

Tomova Enjoying Breakthrough Year

Bulgarian Tomova has been enjoying something of a breakthrough year in 2021.

In March she made her debut in a WTA 1000-level tournament in Dubai as a lucky loser, although she was then beaten first-time up by Elise Mertens.

Then in April she reached her first senior WTA semi-final in Colombia, eventually losing to the French Open semi-finalist Tamara Zidansek.

And then, in Belgrade, where she came through qualifying, she repeated the feat, eventually losing to the Spaniard Paula Badosa.

However, since reaching the second round of Wimbledon, she has lost her last four matches, returning last week to Belgrade to play in a Challenger event where Jule Niemeier of Germany beat her in the first round.

Buzărnescu may be the lower ranked of the two, but she has won all their previous matches, is playing in home conditions, and has once been a top twenty player.
