Seppi Continues to Play On

Seppi is at the veteran stage of a career that has seen him win 3 senior ATP titles and reach a ranking high of 18 in the world. That was eight years ago, though, and he has not won a tournament since 2012, although he did reach the fianl of the New York Open last year, losing to Kyle Edmund in straight sets.

However, he did win a tournament on the Challenger tour on home soil in Biella in March.

The Italian has not made that many appearances on the senior tour since then, but he did enjoy some success on grass, coming through qualifying to make the quarter-finals in Eastbourne. And then he reached the second round of Wimbledon before losing to the American Denis Kudla.

Last week in Atlanta he was beaten in the first round by the American Bjorn Fratangelo, the world number 187, in straight sets.

Uchiyama Yet to Reach a Third Round in 2021

As a junior, Uchiyama was a beaten finalist in the doubles at the Australian Open in 2009, and has won 8 ITF Futures Singles title. He also reached the final of the Lexington Challenger six years ago, losing to the Australian John Millman on that occasion.

His biggest win on the senior tour, in fact, came in doubles. With partner Ben McLachlan, he won the Japan Open in 2017.

Although he spends the majority of his time on the Challenger circuit, he does appear on the main tour, and featured in all three Grand Slams this year, losing in the first round on each occasion.

He made it through to the second round in Singapore, Miami, and Los Cabos, but has been no further in 2021.

And, last week, like Seppi, he suffered a first round defeat, although he did take the Frenchman Benoît Paire to three sets.
