Marino, Ranked No. 219

The fact that Rebecca Marino is the current World No. 219 with her best singles ranking of #38 coming in July 2011 says all there is to know about her form.

The 30-year-old has spent the better part of the 2021 season on the ITF circuit where she hasn’t enjoyed a lot of success. It was only in July that she won her first singles title since 2019. The trophy run came in ITF Evansville $25,000 – apart from this, she was also the runner-up in women’s doubles in ITF Bellinzona $60,000.

As for her run on the WTA Tour, the best she has done is reaching the second round in the Australian Open and Phillip Island Trophy – both as a qualifier.

She will be playing in her home tournament after a litany of consecutive, early-round exits in the WTA 125K series events in Concord and Charleston.

Keys, Stunned by Zhang in San Jose

Following a bleak start to the season, Madison Keys was starting to enjoy a good spell on the tour with deep runs in Bett1Open and Wimbledon.

In fact, it was in these grass tournaments that Keys reached the quarterfinal and fourth-round respectively to mark her best performances in 2021. These results, in many ways, set the stage for a big comeback from Keys in the United States.

Playing in the Silicon Valley Classic last week – a tournament that the 26-year-old conquered back in 2017 – she surprisingly lost to Shuai Zhang in the first round.

Now she will be hoping to avoid a similar fate in the Canadian Open. This is also another tournament where World No. 26 has featured in the final, back in 2016.

Keys v Marino Prediction and Tip

Keys will start as the heavy favourite, given her overall form, playing time on the tour, and of course, her superior pedigree. It is hard to imagine her succumb to a player ranked well below 200 places than her.
