Daria Kasatkina v Petra Martic Head to Head

The head-to-head between 31st-ranked Kasatkina and 33rd-ranked Martic stands at 1-1. The Croat won the pair’s first meeting in Cincinnati in 2018, but Kasatkina dropped just four games in their match this year at the Phillip Island Trophy.

Kasatkina Reaches San Jose Final

At the time of writing, Daria Kasatkina is due to play in the San Jose final against American Danielle Collins. The WTA 500-level event in California featured a strong lineup including three top-20 players.

Kasatkina who is in the midst of a career resurgence has reached her third final of 2021, beating Caroline Garcia, Magda Linette, and the top seed from Belgium Elise Mertens. Her virtuoso display against Mertens signified her fine progress this season under the tutelage of Carlos Martinez.

The Russian was not part of the Russian Olympic Committee that competed in Tokyo, but has been in fine fettle at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. She dismissed Mertens in 81 minutes, landing 77% of first serves (saving the lone break points she faced), and fired 22 winners to just 11 unforced errors.

Kasatkina will re-enter the top-30 in the coming days for the first time in over two years, but she will have very little to celebrate (if she wins), as the National Bank Open in Canada kicks off in under 24 hours time.

Martic Fell to Linette in San Jose

Petra Martic was one match away from booking a meeting against Kasatkina in the second round of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. But that was before Magda Linette stunned the 33rd-ranked Croat in straight sets.

Martic lost 7-5 7-6 in a nip and tuck contest that could have easily gone her way. The 30-year-old has now fallen to 13-15 for the season and is without back-to-back wins on hard courts since reaching the quarterfinal of the Phillip Island Trophy in February.

Martic’s strong form on the clay season yielded a semifinal showing in Rome and a quarterfinal in Parma, and for the moment seems enough to have retained her status inside the world’s top 40.

But with the US Open around the corner, the former World No. 14 cannot afford to rest on her laurels in the leadup tournaments, starting with the National Bank Open.

Despite a decade-long career at tour-level, Martic has actually not played a main draw match at the Canadian Open.

Kasatkina v Martic Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina is poised to continue her sizzling run of form on hard courts. But considering her exploits in San Jose and the effects of jetlag, odds on Martic to take a set look surprisingly high.
