Basilashvili Looking to Start Well

He has already won two titles this year, featured in two semifinals and reached the Round of 16 in Tokyo. But despite his accomplishments, he has lacked consistency and every moment of triumph has been followed by a string of disappointing results. A 21-19 season record is a testament to that.

This will be the third time that the World No. 41 will be competing at the Canadian Masters, having lost in the opening round in 2017 and in the Round of 16 in 2019, when he was beaten by Alexander Zverev in three. The German also ended Basilashvili’s Olympic dreams this year, beating the Georgian in the Round of 16 on his way to winning the gold.

A champion in Doha and Munich this year, Basilashvili will be aiming for a sixth career title, but faces a very tricky opener against a 20-year-old who has drawn a lot of attention over the last few weeks.

Brooksby Making an Impression

He was sensational on the grass courts of Newport last month and equally stunning on the hard courts of Washington this week. Twenty-year-old Jenson Brooksby has been the focus of attention over the last fews weeks and there could be a few more successes lying ahead this year.

The World No. 130, who won three Challenger titles this year, reached the final in Newport, winning four consecutive matches, including the semifinal against the much higher-ranked Jordan Thompson. The dream grass debut eventually ended with a defeat to two-time Grand Slam runner-up Kevin Anderson in the final.

The American got his revenge over Anderson in the first round in Washington this week and then went on to beat World No. 53 Frances Tiafoe and World No. 20 Felix Auger-Aliassime en route a first ATP 500 semifinal. He eventually fell to Jannik Sinner in the semifinal, but given his form he could well be in for a few more surprise runs this season. It will be interesting to see if that can happen in Canada.

Basilashvili v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

Basilashvili has delivered a number of great results this year and given his experience, the Georgian will be seen as the favourite. But let’s not forget Brooksby is in red-hot form right now and has been powering past high quality opponents. There is a good chance of Brooksby dumping out the higher-ranked Basilashvili in the first round.
