Simona Halep v Danielle Collins Head to Head

There has only been one previous match between these two players before this and that came at the 2014 US Open with Halep winning in three sets and proceeding to round two.

Halep Back after Three Months

The last time Halep took to a tennis court for a competitive match was in Rome in May. She retired from that second round encounter against Angelique Kerber and proceeded to pull out of both, French Open and Wimbledon because of a calf injury.

It’s taken her three months and a serious plummet in the rankings to return to the sport and it will be interesting to see if the after-effects of that injury end up playing any part in it.

The good news for Halep is she is returning to hard court surfaces, where she did show some form at the start of the season. At the Australian Open, her only Grand Slam appearance of the season, the Romanian made it to the quarterfinal in what was her top showing.

What Halep will know is she is coming up against a player who looks like she means business and could have her hands full against the American.

Consistent Collins Continues to Roll

It was expected to be a straightforward win for Collins in her opener against Jil Teichmann but turned out to be a comeback-from-behind, three-set victory in the end.

Collins won 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in two hours, breaking her opponent five times to her own loss of serve on two separate occasions.

And it showed Collins in a different light with the American exhibiting signs of the kind of fighting spirit that has helped her propel into the top 30.

A San Jose Open title victory last week made it her second tournament win for the season, following a victory at Palermo Open. As a result of that, Collins enters this encounter on a 11-match winning streak.

The question now is if Collins can take down a champion player like Halep who is on a comeback trail because of her injury issues.

Halep v Collins Prediction and Tip

While Halep was, not so long ago, a top-3 player, it would be a test of her match fitness as she returns from her injury. Collins could hold the edge here.
