Zverev Eases Past Pella

Olympic gold medallist Alexander Zverev extended his win streak to eight matches with a routine straight sets win over Argentina’s Guido Pella in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters.

The German didn’t face a break point in the entire match as he broke Pella four times to register a 6-2, 6-3 win in an hour and 14 minutes. Zverev won 80% of his service points and 47% return points to march into his maiden quarterfinals in Cincinnati, where he had a 0-6 record from previous six appearances.

On Wednesday, the World No. 5 finally ended the Cincinnati jinx with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over South Africa’s Lloyd Harris in the second round.

The third-round win improved the German’s tour record to 35-11 this year. Besides winning the gold in Tokyo by overpowering Karen Khachanov in the final, Zverev won the Masters 1000 title in Madrid and an ATP 500 in Acapulco to take his total tally of titles to 16.

Ruud Breezes Past Schwartzman

Having toughed it out against Toronto finalist Reilly Opelka on Wednesday, Casper Ruud had a relatively easy outing on Thursday as the Norwegian eased into the quarterfinals with a straight sets win over Diego Schwartzman.

Ruud got the only break of the first set at 5-4 and then broke Schwartzman early in the second to seize the advantage. The eighth seed protected the lead till the end, to take the contest 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes.

Winning 91% first-serve points and 82% total service points, Ruud dominated the contest from start to finish. He didn’t face a break point in the match, while converting two of seven.

Ruud had rallied to beat Opelka 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round for a 100th career win. With 74 of those wins coming on clay there are no prizes for guessing what’s his favourite surface, but a 9-2 record on hard courts this season, suggest that the 22-year-old is fast developing into an all-surface player.

Ruud, who reached a career-high ranking of 11 this week, has won four titles this year, all on clay, and heads to the quarterfinal in Cincinnati with a 15-1 record from his last 16 completed matches.

Zverev v Ruud Prediction and Tip

Despite Ruud’s form, Zverev will be the favourite on hard courts. The German is in red-hot form and looks unstoppable at the moment.
