Podoroska Knocks Out Pera

The World No. 37 needed an hour and 23 minutes to beat America’s Bernarda Pera 6-2, 6-4 in the first round on Sunday.

Podoroska dominated the first set with three breaks of serve, while getting broken just once. The second set was a closely contested one, with Pera getting the first break to go 0-2 up, which started a series of four consecutive break of serves.

The Argentine eventually got the vital third break later in the set to go 5-4 up and then held on to close out the contest.

The 24-year-old, who reached the semifinals of the French Open last year, has been inconsistent this year. She has featured in three quarterfinals this season and came into the tournament with an average 16-17 record.

Over the last two weeks, Podorsoka reached the second round in Montreal, but was eliminated in the first round in Cincinnati.

Sasnovich Holds of McHale

Sasnovich entered the second round with a straight sets win over America’s Christina Mchale on Monday.

The Belarusian won the first set with two breaks of serve against one. In the second, she had two match points while serving for the match at 5-2, but a determined Mchale won three games in a row to draw level at 5-5. Holding her nerves, Sasnovich broke again to go 6-5 up and then closed out the one-hour-and-53-minute contest 6-4, 7-5.

Sasnovich, who qualified for the Cincinnati Open last week, was dumped out in the first round by Heather Watson.

The World No. 99, who has played in two WTA finals in her career, has reached just one tour-level quarterfinal this year. She has struggled to win two matches in a row in most of the tournaments, but featured in the third round at Wimbledon after getting a lucky pass in the first round with Serena Williams retiring with the score at 3-3 in the first set.
