Diego Schwartzman v Kevin Anderson Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two and Anderson leas 2-1. More importantly in their only match on hard court surfaces, Anderson had defeated Schwartzman at the 2015 Australian Open.

Schwartzman Runs Down Ricardas

It turned out to be one of the more straightforward first round wins outside of clay for Schwartzman as he romped to a straight-set victory over Ricardas Berankis.

Schwartzman was on court for two hours and 23 minutes as he carved out a 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 victory, breaking his opponent five times in the process. In turn, Schwartzman faced eight break-points and was broken just once – and that came in the fourth game of the encounter.

Serving for a 3-1 lead, Schwartzman dropped his serve but then came back to break in the 11th game and served it out to clinch the first set. The next two were a lot easier for the Argentine who gave Berankis no chance for a fightback.

The question is whether the clay court specialist Schwartzman can do the same to the former world number five but one who has had a decent record on this surface.

Anderson Stretched to Five Sets

Going into his opening encounter as a 1/4 favourite, Anderson wouldn’t have expected to be stretched the manner in which he did in his opener.

Not only did Anderson need five sets to come through his encounter, the South African also needed three tiebreakers to get there. And the match lasted a whopping four hours and 19 minutes.

Anderson looked to be reading from the script when he clinched the opening set in a tie-breaker, winning it 7-1 but two shock breaks late in the second and third sets of the encounter meant Anderson was in some strife.

It took Anderson to feature in another couple of tiebreakers to reach round two. Can the South Africa reclaim some of his old days?

Schwartzman v Anderson Prediction and Tip

This could well turn out to be an exciting encounter with neither player looking to give an inch. Expect four or five sets in the match.
