Dusan Lajovic v Cristian Garin Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before on the senior tour, on clay in 2013 in Chile, Garin winning in straight sets in front of his home fans.

More recently they met in a Challenger event in Guadeloupe in 2018 on hard courts, Lajovic emerging the winner on that occasion, again in straight sets.

Lajovic Assumes Djokovic’s Mantle

With the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic from the event – his subsequent participation ion the Australian Open is also now in considerable doubt – it now falls to Lajovic to lead the Serbian team as the highest ranked remaining player in the squad.

Not that the responsibility will be a burden to him – he was part of the Serbian team that won the competition with them two years ago, has been a Davis Cup finalist, and twice a semi-finalist, including at the start of last month.

Singles wise though he is still searching for continued success – his one solitary senior singles title remains the Croatian Open which he won in 2019, a few months after he was a beaten finalist in the Monte Carlo Masters.

However, despite being primarily regarded as s clay court player, he had his best ever result in a Grand Slam at the Australian Open last year, reaching the fourth round.

Garin Already Looking Forward to South American Swing

Garin, the Chilean number one, might be looking forward already to the South Americans swing which starts at the beginning of February.

The clay court specialist has reached four of his six finals in events played in the region over the years, including his most recent success which came on home soil in Santiago last March.

He is back on Australian soil after a two-year absence – he was one of the players that chose not to travel last year because they did not want to subject themselves to the country’s strict quarantine measures.

However, the surfaces he finds in Australia tend to not suit his natural game, and he ahs never been beyond the second round in Melbourne, making it the least favourite of all the Grand Slam for him.

Despite that, his fourth round at Wimbledon lasty year suggests he is learning to adapt his game to other surfaces.

Lajovic v Garin Prediction and Tip

This is a match between two men, both of whom would be happier on a clay court. Based though on world rankings, and the fact that he has achieved more recent individual success, Garin is the favourite to win this match.
