Ashleigh Barty v Sofia Kenin Head to Head

The two ladies have quite a bit of rivalry going on between them. At the moment, it is Barty who is in the lead with 4-2, last defeating Kenin in the 2019 Wuhan Open.

They also met in the 2020 Australian Open where the young American prevailed in the semis in straight sets.

Kenin, Hoping to Emulate 2020 Success

Sofia Kenin enjoyed a career-defining season in 2020, winning the Australian Open crown and later reaching the final at the French Open.

In 2021, things went downhill for the former world number four as she failed to defend her crown in Melbourne. Not only that, but the 23-year-old also struggled heavily with form as she incurred shocking losses against many lower-ranked players.

Injuries also took their toll and all of these added together compelled Kenin to call off the season right after the Wimbledon.

So far in Adelaide, things haven’t been that smooth for the #12th ranked player. She defeated Lucia Bronzetti in the opener in straight sets but struggled against Ajla Tomljanovic in the next round.

It took Kenin two and a half hours to win with 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. In the process, she also saved three crucial match points, trailing 5-6 in the second set to take things into a tie-break. Having survived that tense affair, the American took control in the third set.

Barty, in Control

Ashleigh Barty has been the No. 1 ranked player on the WTA Tour for the last three seasons – and it is not too difficult to imagine why. She has an excellent all-court game and is well balanced in all departments.

The cricketer-turned-tennis pro won five singles titles last season, including the Miami Open, Wimbledon, and Cincinnati Open. And needless to say, the 25-year-old Aussie has done well to carry forward that fine form to 2022.

Starting as the top seed with a bye into the second round, she toppled Cori Gauff 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 after losing the first set. It was a good match from Barty, who admittedly took some time to find her bearings.

She is also competing with Storm Sanders in the doubles department and is set to face the pairing of Nadiia Kichenok and Sania Mirza after her singles bout.

Barty v Kenin Prediction and Tip

Barty has been largely consistent for the better part of the last three years. Kenin, on the other hand, has had her ups and downs as she struggled with form. She didn’t play a lot of tennis either and that may prove to be costly in this match.

Nonetheless, the spirited comeback against Tomljanovic should get her ready for what’s to come against the top-ranked Barty. Ultimately, the Aussie should come out on the top but not after a demanding play.
