Starting out as a second favourite in his second round encounter against Alex Molcan, Goffin went down in straight sets in that match at the Melbourne Summer Set Open last week.
Goffin, who had an opening round bye, lost 7-5, 6-3 to crash out in the very first match he played this year and will now need to try and re-establish a sense of stability heading into the year’s opening Grand Slam.
A former top 10 player, Goffin’s performances over the last couple of seasons have left a lot to desire. A title win in Montpellier 2021 aside, Goffin has barely anything to show for his tennis ending the previous season on a six-match losing streak.
Which is also why he had begun as the second favourite against Molcan and crashed to his seventh successive defeat, making this match a very important fixture for the Belgian. Can he get his season moving?

Bagnis Coming off a High
While Bagnis did go down in the second round of the Melbourne Summer Set competition last week, it wasn’t without the kind of confidence he would have loved to take into this week’s Sydney International.
For starters, he overcame the 1/10 favourite Andy Murray in the first round, defeating the former Grand Slam winner 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to reach round two.
And while he went down to Grigor Dimitrov in the second round, it wasn’t without pushing the Bulgarian to the limits – the Argentine clinched the opening set and then had a chance when he took his opponent to the tie-breaker before losing 6-3 in the third.
Bagnis now faces an opponent who has been struggling for form and while the Argentine is more of a clay-court specialist, he will know he has a chance here.
