Daniil Medvedev v Henri Laaksonen Head to Head

Medvedev has won both their previous meetings. One of them was at a lower level event in 2016 and the other at the Davis cup in 2019.

Medvedev Faces a Tough Route to Finals

With Novak Djokovic out of the tournament, the Australian Open will get a new champion for the first time since 2018, when Roger Federer beat Marin Cilic for the title.

Since then, the Serb has won three in a row, but won’t be able to defend this year, making the second seed Daniil Medvedev one of the top favourites to win the title. The others of course are Rafael Nadal, who is chasing a record 21st Grand Slam, third seed Alexander Zverev and fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, with the latter two looking to capture their maiden major titles.

A 13-time champion on the tour, Medvedev is coming off a 63-13 season. He captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open, getting a sweet revenge over Novak Djokovic, who had beaten the Russian at the Australian Open final. In addition, the World No. 2 won titles in Marseille, Mallorca and the Canadian Masters and finished runner-up at the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals.

While Medvedev will be backed to go all the way to the title, he faces a tough road to a second consecutive final in Melbourne. Medvedev faces a potential second round match against Nick Kyrgios, a player he is yet to beat after two previous meetings. In the third round, the Russian could be up against France’s Ugo Humbert, the only man to have beaten Medvedev this year. That defeat came at the ATP Cup, with the Frenchman winning 6-7, 7-5, 7-6.

Medvedev is projected to meet Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round and there is a good chance of him facing either Andrey Rublev or Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinal. A potential semifinal against Stefanos Tsitsipas is also highly likely. Last year, Medvedev had beaten Rublev in the last eight and Tsitsipas in the final four stage.

It will be interesting to see if he can repeat his last year’s exploits.

Laaksonen Has Little Chance of Advancing

World No. 92 Henri Laaksonen will be playing in the main draw of the Australian Open for just the third time. He has progressed to the second round just once, while losing in the first round last year. He has very little chance of advancing this year either as he faces the second seed in the opener.

Laaksonen is 2-2 overall this year, including Melbourne qualifiers. He lost his second qualifying round but still got a berth in the main draw as a lucky loser, where he beat Benoit Paire in the first round, but lost to Jaume Munar in straight sets.

The 29-year-old Swiss was 9-7 last year, with some of his best results coming at the U.S. Open, where he beat Cristian Garin and John Millman to reach the third round; and in Bastad, where he knocked out Lorenzo Musetti en route the quarterfinals.

Laaksonen, who mostly features in the Challenger tournaments, won a sixth Challenger title last year.

Medvedev v Laaksonen Prediction and Tip

This should be a straight forward win for Medvedev. The Russian needs to start well and getting into a good rhythm quickly. Expect him to win in straight sets.
