Lucas Pouille v Gilles Simon Head to Head

Simon holds a 3-1 lead over Pouille, last defeating his compatriot in the 2018 Paris Masters.

Simon, a Former Top 10 Player

At one point in time, Gilles Simon was a formidable player on the ATP Tour but that form seems to have faded as the years passed by.

The 37-year-old has 14 singles titles and 8 runner-up trophies to his name with his last singles final on the circuit coming in 2019. Over the last couple of seasons, Simon has been struggling with his form and consequently, his ranking took a sharp hit.

Currently ranked World No. 130, Simon had to start in the Open Sud de France as a qualifier – defeating the likes of Marc-Andrea Hüsler and Antoine Hoang to reach the main draw.

So far in 2022, the Frenchman has featured in three tournaments – two of which were Challenger events and one was the Australian Open. Simon lost in the opening round in two of those while reaching the quarterfinal Traralgon Challenger.

As for Simon’s history in Montpellier, he has reached the semifinal just once in all his appearances in the last 10 years or so. In his last three stints, he fell in the first round.

Pouille Working Hard

Lucas Pouille underwent surgery in late 2019 and returned to the tennis scene only in 2021. His path to recovery and former glory has been a long and arduous one.

The former World No. 10 is now ranked in the mid 150s as he looks to bag some wins and build some momentum. It is proving to be easier said than done, given that Pouille is yet to pick an ATP win this season.

The 27-year-old participated in ATP Melbourne, ATP Sydney, and the Australian Open where he lost all three of his first-round bouts. He found some reprieve in a Challenger event in Quimper where he made it as far as the second round.

A champion in Montpellier in 2018, Pouille’s heroics from last season entail reaching the final in Cassis Challenger and the third round in the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Pouille v Simon Prediction and Tip

Simon may boast of a superior pedigree than Pouille but he is way out of form and his struggles are evident. This serves as a perfect opportunity for Pouille to finally open his 2022 tally and pick a much-needed victory.

However, don’t be surprised if it turns into a slogfest.
