Goffin is still searching for that elusive form that made him a regular top ten player for a number of years.
2021 was largely a year to forget for the Belgian number one, with injury hindering his progress in the second half of the season.
And 2022 has been a mixed bag so far.
He began the year brightly, reaching the quarter-finals in Sydney before he had to pull out of his match with Andy Murray with an injury.
However, another British player, Dan Evans, ended his interest in the Australian Open in the first round, soundly beaten in straight sets.
Closer to home last week in Montpellier, he struggled past the French world number 68, Benjamin Bonzi in the first round, despite dropping the first set, but then lost to Bonzi’s compatriot Adrian Mannarino, winning just six games in the match.

De Minaur’s First Match in Europe This Year
De Minaur won tournaments in 2021 in Antalya and Eastbourne, but his season was derailed after he caught Covid. He missed the Olympics as a result, and struggled to get back to the same performance levels after that.
There are signs though, that he is now getting back to his best, beginning with his performances in the ATP Cup playing for Australia, where he won two of his singles matches, including a creditable victory over Matteo Berettini.
He then carried the burden of being the top ranked men’s player into the Australian Open, but, despite that pressure., reached the fourth round, matching his previous best in a Grand Slam, before losing in straight sets to Jannik Sinner.
This will be his first match in Europe this year.
