Marketa Vondrousova v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

In their one and only meeting on the WTA Tour, Vondrousova emerged as the winner. She took the win in the 2021 Australian Open with 6-4, 6-2.

Cirstea Off to a Good Start

2021 was a positive year for Sorana Cirstea, having moved up some 50 odd places in the ranking to end the season as World No. 37. One month into the new season and she has already climbed up to 31st place.

The Romanian, despite losing in the early rounds in Melbourne 2 and Adelaide 2, made amends for her rocky form in the Australian Open. There, she made it as far as the fourth round after upsetting some big names like Petra Kvitova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. While the 31-year-old Romanian ultimately fell to Iga Swiatek, it wasn’t before fighting for three sets with 7-5, 3-6, 3-6.

Cirstea will now set her sights on the St. Petersburg Open – a tournament where she has featured just once in 2018 and ended up losing in the first round to Dominika Cibulkova.

Last year was her best one on the record yet – she reached two singles finals in Istanbul and Strasbourg, going the distance in the former. Cirstea also made it to the fourth round in the French Open.

Vondrousova, a Force to be Reckoned with

A second-round loss to Ana Konjuh in Adelaide 2 and a third-round defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka in the Melbourne Slam – such has been the season for Marketa Vondrousova so far. On the doubles circuit, she did reach the final in Adelaide with Tereza Martincova but had to settle for the runner-up silverware.

However, the 22-year-old left-handed player is not to be underestimated. Last season, the Czech featured in a string of semifinals towards the end of the calendar in Luxembourg, Chicago, and the Kremlin Cup.

Vondrousova also won the silver at Tokyo Olympics, upsetting Naomi Osaka, Paula Badosa, and Elina Svitolina en route.

And to add to this pedigree, the current World No. 38 is also a former French Open finalist who is known for her crafty style of play.

Cirstea v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Cirstea is in a good position to capitalise on her recent form and reach the second round, but it will not be easy for her to surpass Vondrousova. Nonetheless, the fact that the Romanian is starting as the underdog here with a fairly high price makes us want back her.
