Jo-Wilfred Tsonga v Gilles Simon Head to Head

The pair have played each other thirteen times before over the years and Tsonga leads their head to head series by nine matches to four. Two of those matches came in this tournament, in 2013 and 2017, Tsonga winning in straight sets on both occasions.

They last met in Antwerp in 2019, when Simon won.

Tsonga Back on Tour After a Break

Tsonga reached the second round in Marseille last year, but failed to win a match after that, and, after being knocked out of the first round of Wimbledon, took the rest of the year off.

He had hoped to be offered a wildcard to the Australian Open, but, when the French Tennis Federation gave it to Lucas Pouille instead, he began, instead, his season at a Challenger tournament in Quimper, where he reached the second round.

He beat a qualifier in the first round in Montpellier, but then lost to the Serb, Filip Krajinovic, in straight sets.

Last week in Rotterdam he was knocked out in the first round by the world number 11, Hubert Hurkasz, of Poland.

Simon Aiming to Scale Back

Like Tsonga, but a year older, Simon is now approaching the veteran stage of his career, and has indicated that he now intends to play less matches in 2022.

Unlike his opponent, though, he did travel to Australia, where he reached the quarter-final of a Challenger event, but then failed to ger beyond the first round of qualifying for the Grand Slam itself.

Like Tsonga, he played in the Challenger tournament in Quimper, but was beaten in the first round.

Made to qualify in Montpellier, he reached the second round, but was well beaten then by the Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut.

Since then, he has participated in yet another Challenger event on French soil, losing in the second round in Cherbourg last week.

Tsonga v Simon Prediction and Tip

Two French wildcards who are both now at the veteran stage of their careers resume a long standing rivalry in this match. Tsonga has had the better of it over the years, and will be looking to extend that sequence.
