Pierre-Hugues Herbert v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, all three matches taking place on  French soil. Kukushkin won their match at the Paris Masters in 2018, but Hebert avenged that loss in this tournament two years ago.

Most recently they met in the second round of qualifying in Montpellier just over two weeks ago, Herbert winning in straight sets.

Herbert Beaten Finalist Last Year

Herbert is better known as a doubles player – with regular partner Nicholas Mahut, he has been in six Grand Slam finals and won five of them, most recently the French Open last year.

He has also been in four singles finals, and, last year, was beaten by Daniil Medvedev for the title in three close sets.

Consistency is a problem for him – he lost form after Marseille last year, and his ranking suffered as a result.

He missed the Australian events this year because he was unvaccinated, and has yet to set foot outside France.

After beating Kukushkin in qualifying, he reached the second round in Montpellier, losing then to the eventual winner, Alexander Bublik.

Last week, he also played in the Cherbourg Challenger event, reaching the quarter-final stage.

Kukushkin’s Best Days in the Past

Kukushkin is one of those players whose best days appear to be behind him. He won his only title in 2010 and, although he has been in three finals since, his last was in this event three years ago.

At that time, he was a top 40 player, but his slide down the rankings since then has been precipitous, and he now alternates between the Challenger tour and attempting to qualifying for senior events.

He did manage to qualify for the Australian Open, but was beaten in the first round by the American Tommy Paul, and Herbert ended his hopes in the qualifying competition in Montpellier.

The Kazakh played in a Challenger event in Cherbourg before attempting to qualify in Marseille, succeeding this time,  beating first Timo Legoût of France, and then the Swiss player Marc-Andrea Huesler.

Herbert v Kukushkin Prediction and Tip

The fact that these two met less than two weeks ago is a  useful form guide. Herbert won that match, and he will be start clear favourite to do so again.

Tip: Herbert to win: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
