Tommy Paul v Denis Istomin Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, in a Davis Cup qualifier two year ago, Paul winning in straight sets.

Paul ended 2021 on a high, clinching his first senior title at the Swedish Open in Stockholm in November, beating Denis Shapovalov in the final.
And he began the new year strongly as well in Australia, with two successive quarter-final appearances in Adelaide, losing to the eventual winners each time, Gael Monfils and Marin Cilic, respectively.
He would have been hoping for a deep run at the Australian Open, but, having beaten the qualifier Mikhaill Kukushkin in the first round, he lost to the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, in the second.
This is his first event since them, and he was given a first round bye.

Istomin Produces First Round Surprise
Istomin, was once a top 40 player, and he has won two senior titles in his time. But he had not won a match in the main draw in an ATP event for more than a year before he produced one of the surprises of the first round by knocking out one of the local favourites, Sam Querrey.
He had already beaten two higher ranked men in the form of Jurij Rodionov of Austria and Emilio Gomez of Ecuador in qualifying, just to get to that stage, but Querrey was a step above, even though the American is out of form right now.
Istomin made the best possible start, breaking Querrey in the opening game of the match. A further break saw him take the set with no further alarms.
The second set went with serve until Querrey had to save two match points.
That meant a tie-break, and, although Istomin was the first to drop his serve, he recovered that and then moved a mini-break up. When a third match point presented itself, he served out.
Paul v Istomin Prediction and Tip
Although Istomin pulled off a surprise win in the opening round, that was his first win in the main draw of an ATP event for more than a year. It would be asking a lot to expect a second, especially against an opponent like Paul.
