Jaume Munar was long touted as one of the best up and coming clay players in the world. His level on the surface can be extremely high when he plays with a lot of confidence. When he nearly ousted Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Roland Garros a few years ago many wondered just how good he could be. Since then it has been a mixed bag of results.
The Spaniard has not elevated his play or his level in recent years even coming fairly close to dropping out of the top 100. His play this year has been okay at best with the Spaniard now having the best of times on his preferred clay.
He is 2-3 on clay this year with his only two wins coming over Benoit Paire and Thomas Etcheverry. Two of his three losses came to Diego Schwartzman and Carlos Alcaraz so he gets a bit of a pass for that. Against Galan, he had a very rough time a couple of weeks ago. Can he turn it around this time?

Galan Rediscovering Form in South America
Daniel Galan had a very promising start to last year when he made a deep run at the Miami Masters. The Colombian has a very solid tennis game suited for both hard courts and clay but since the Miami result, his form dipped dramatically over the course of the year. Not even clay could fix that and his ranking plummeted to outside of the top 100.
Lately, his level has been increasing steadily with some solid performances on clay. He’s up to 10 wins on the surface already mainly due to having to play qualies in the majority of event he played but a quarterfinal in Cordoba showed he has the level to be good on the main tour. His Rio run was cut short by Delbonis in the first round but overall Galan has played well.
His opponent in Santiago will be Munar and they played in Cordoba. That was Galan’s best event this year and he defeated the Spaniard in three sets. Whether he can do it again remains to be seen but Munar has picked up form since their last matchup.
Munar v Galan Prediction and Tip
Munar and Galna played once before in their careers. That match came not long ago in Cordoba with the Colombian winning in three sets. Since then it’s been a solid string of results by both. Neither had much luck with the draw but both have played competitive matches.
They play contrasting styles of tennis with Glana more of an attacker with a strong first serve and Munar very tactical player who prefers longer rallies. Those matchups usually depend on the conditions with Cordoba favouring Galan a bit more than Munar.
The Spaniard played a superb match against Alcaraz nearly beating the Spaniard which might indicate an increase in form lately. Galan has been okay since Cordoba but nothing special. It’s a tough matchup to call but I do think we will see three sets. I’m leaning Munar for the win but the over seems like the most plausible outcome.
