Maria Sakkari v Ann Li Head to Head

Sixth seed Maria Sakkari comes to Doha in good form. She is 8-3 this season and has already featured in a final, in St. Petersburg this month.
Ranked No. 6, the 26-year-old was the top seed at the St. Petersburg Open and she seemed to be cruising to the title until the final, when she squandered a one-set-to-love lead to finish second against Annett Konatveit.
Sakkari, who has won just one title in her career, had seven semifinal finishes and a runner-up finish last year. Three of those semifinals came at the French Open, the U.S. Open and the WTA Finals.
This year, the Greek was slow off the blocks, winning one and losing the next in Adelaide. She got into a good rhythm at the Melbourne major, storming into the fourth round without dropping a set, but was denied a place in the quarters by Jessica Pegula.
In St. Petersburg, Sakkari didn’t have much trouble in the first three matches, but was stretched to three sets in the semifinal against Irina-Camelia Begu.
This is Sakkari’s fourth main draw appearance in Doha. She was a quarterfinalist last year, falling to Garbine Muguruza.

Li Piles More Misery on Kenin
The United States’ Ann Li battled past Sofia Kenin in the first round in Qatar to extend the latter’s winless streak to five matches.
Ranked No. 58, Li came out on top in the first set with two breaks of serve against one from Kenin.
Both players traded two breaks each in the second before Kenin edged the tiebreak to force the decider. Li got the sole break in the third and wrapped up the one-hour-and-56-minute match 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.
The win ended Li’s three-match skid.
Since suffering a semifinal defeat to Aliaksandra Sasnovich, she faced first-round exits at the Australian Open and the Dubai Championships.
Last year, the 21-year-old was a winner in Tenerife and a finalist at the Grampians Trophy. She is making her debut in Doha.
