Matteo Berrettini v Tommy Paul Head to Head

Matteo Berrettini has not played Tommy Paul before this.

Berrettini Endures Underwhelming Golden Swing

Matteo Berrettini was making an unaccustomed appearance in South America this past week. Berrettini was the top seed at the Rio Open in Brazil in his debut appearance at the tournament.

But right from the off, the Italian looked a shadow of a man occupying sixth place in the ATP rankings. He survived a nailbiter against the home wild card Thiago Monteiro in his first match, winning 6-4 6-7 6-3 to pick up his seventh win of the season.

But the writing was on the wall. In his third career meeting against Carlos Alcaraz, Berrettini lost out to the young Spaniard in the quarterfinals. He will resume his hard court duties at this week’s Mexican Open, where he is also making his maiden appearance.

Berrettini has performed with distinction on hard courts throughout his career and during the start of this 2022 campaign. He became the first Italian man to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open last month, digging out a couple of five-set wins along the way. But he came up short in the last four showdown against eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Paul Breaks World’s Top 40

American Tommy Paul is soaring to greater heights. 2022 promises to be another special year in Paul’s memory bank.

The 24-year-old has played in four tournaments this season and has only lost before the quarterfinals once (at the Australian Open). He has tallied seven wins in 2022, including a run to the semifinals of Delray Beach a couple of days ago.

Although he lost to Cameron Norrie in straight sets, the American’s productive week in Florida’s southeast coast was enough to earn him a place in the world’s top 40 for the first time.

Paul peaked at No. 39 on the eve of his fourth visit to Acapulco. He has fond memories to draw upon from his 2020 showing in these parts where he reached the quarterfinals as a qualifier and scored one of the biggest wins of his career against Alexander Zverev.

Does the American have another upset up his sleeve?

Berrettini v Paul Prediction and Tip

Berrettini’s gamble to play the Golden Swing was simply a miscalculated decision. But on the bright side, he does have a short timespan to gear up for the North American hard-court swing. So, I expect the Italian to have a slight edge over a rapidly-improving Paul.

Tip: Berrettini to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
