Unable to make it past the first round in the first two tournaments of the season, van Uytvanck finally registered her first main draw of the year at Australian Open where she overcame Cristina Bucsa in straight sets in her opener.
And while she fell in the second round to Wang Qiang despite entering the encounter as a favourite, and then lost her first round match in St. Petersburg as well, van Uytvanck’s form seems to be getting better now.
A second round appearance at Doha would have helped before she won back to back main draw matches for the first time this season. It came at Lyon where she crushed both, Vera Zvonareva and Varvara Gracheva in straight sets to make it to the last eight.
Can she now show some of that form heading into the opener of a tournament she has usually struggled at – a second round appearance is her career-best showing in Indian Wells.

Galfi Improving with Every Tournament
Since the 2018 season, Galfi has shown steady improvement in her performances and that has shown in her rankings.
The Hungarian ended that year ranked 328th, and has followed that up with year-ending rankings of 270th, 220th and 124th in the next three years that followed.
This year she has already hit a career-best of 104th before entering this tournament a spot lower than that. For a player who has never featured at Indian Wells before this, she is defending no points and would also help her get past her career-best ranking.
A win here and that should be enough to help her break into the top 100 for the first time in her career. Wins over Madison Inglis and Lucia Bronzetti in the qualifiers will go a long way in getting her through this hurdle.
