Zhang Shuai v Daria Saville Head to Head

There have been three previous encounters between these two players on the WTA circuit and Zhang leads 2-1.

Saville had won their first meeting in Charleston on clay in 2016 before Shuai defeated her at Hong Kong and Eastbourne.

They had also faced off in a tournament on the ITF circuit, where Zhang had beaten her opponent.

Shuai Showing Pleasing Form

After an ordinary start to the season which saw Shuai losing in the first round at both Melbourne Summer Set 1 and the Sydney International, the world number 41 has finally gotten her season going.

The Chinese player stunned Elena Rybakina on her way to the third round at Australian Open – her second-best career showing at the tournament – and while she struggled with her rhythm in the three tournaments which followed as well, Shuai managed to turn that around in Lyon.

At the Lyon Open played last week, Shuai staved off the challenge from some of the better peers to win the title – her fourth WTA tournament win.

In the process of doing that, Shuai overcame the likes of Kristina Mladenovic, Arantxa Rus, Caroline Garcia and Dayana Yastremska and that should be a huge confidence-booster coming into this opener.

Saville Clawing Back in the Rankings

Having been more or less out of action and fallen to nearly outside the top 700 on the rankings, Saville is looking to make a comeback and slowly but steadily doing a good job of it.

The Aussie had hit a season low of 627th this year but is currently ranked 409th and having qualified for this event should push that up a tad more.

Her ascent this season came on the back of her showing at Guadalajara where Saville entered the quarterfinals with a shock win over Emma Raducanu and Caroline Dolehide.

And even in this competition, Saville’s wins over Kamilla Rakhimova and Magdalena Frech allowed her a place in the main draw – having not featured in it in 2021.

Before that, however, Saville has made it to the third round of this tournament on three successive occasions between 2017 and 2019. Can she pluck some of that form for this one?

Shuai v Saville Prediction and Tip

Shuai starts off a favourite after her title win last week but only just. Saville is showing the kind of form which could give her some edge but can she take it to the distance. We think so.
