Casper Ruud v Henri Laaksonen Head to Head
While they have played at various levels in the qualifiers of ATP competitions and on the Challenger circuit, their only match in the main draw at the highest level ended up being a walkover for Ruud in the 2021 Bastad Open.

With clay being his favourite surface, it’s no surprise Ruud’s performance in hard court tournaments hadn’t been much to write home about. This was, however, till he won his maiden title on that surface in San Diego last year.
It was the sixth of his seven career titles, with the remaining ones having come on clay as expected.
He enters this competition on the back of a second round win in Indian Wells, which was followed by a straight-set defeat at the hands of Nick Kyrgios. Even more interestingly, Ruud has also never won a match in the main draw of tournaments in Miami, having played here four times.
His best performances, first round exits in 2017 and 2019, have already been usurped as a result of a bye into the second round here but can he now win a match in this competition?

Laaksonen Doubles His ATP Win Count
It was in the first ever tournament he featured in this season that Laaksonen had won his first and only main draw match of the season till before he came to Miami.
Since then, in the six ATP competitions that followed, Laaksonen was unable to repeat the feat, struggling either to qualify for the main draw or even making it past the first round.
Against Benoit Paire, however, Laaksonen doubled his win count, but even that victory was a scrappy one that saw the need of a third set. He won 7-6 (8), 1-6, 6-4 to reach round two and set up this meeting with Ruud.
In a match lasting two hours and 12 minutes, Laaksonen won the first set off his fifth set-point, was drubbed in the second before managing that solitary and decisive break of serve in the final set to carve out the victory.
It would be an uphill task, however, against Ruud.

While Ruud’s performances on this kind of a surface aren’t the best, he should not have a lot of difficulties getting past the woefully out of form Laaksonen.
