Aslan Karatsev, who had a breakthrough year last season, picking two titles and reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, comes to Monte Carlo with an 8-7 record in 2022. Since winning 4 matches in Sydney and 2 at the Australian Open, Karatsev has won just two matches in the next six tournaments.
One of those wins came against Rune in Marseille, while the other came against Ugo Humbert in Miami.
The World No. 31 will be making his season debut on clay in Monte Carlo. He was 1-1 on debut in the tournament last year. Overall, the 28-year-old has a 9-6 record on clay and last year he made it to the final of a clay-court tournament in Belgrade.

In-form Rune Comes Through Qualifiers
Holger Rune didn’t have a promising start to 2022, winning just two and losing seven of his tour-level matches.
The 18-year-old however, seems to have struck form over the last one week. First the Dane picked the Sanremo Challenger, his fifth on the Challenger Tour and then immediately went into the qualifying rounds of Monte Carlo, beating Radu Albot 6-2, 6-3 in the first qualifying round and then defeating the United States’ Maxime Cressy in the second qualifying round.
Ranked No. 91 in the world, Rune has six titles and two runner-up finishes on clay in the lower tiers. He will be looking to win his first tour-level match on clay this season after losing in the first rounds in Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Santiago. Overall he has a 4-11 record on the surface at the top level.
