Lorenzo Sonego v Laslo Djere Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before.

Sonego won their first meeting in Marrakesh in 2019, but Djere won their only encounter on hard courts in Doha in 2020.

Last year they met in the final in Cagliari and again in Rio two months ago. They were both clay court events and Sonego emerged the victor each time.

Sonego Wins Comfortably in the First Round

Three years ago Sonego reached the last eight in Monte Carlo before losing to compatriot and eventual winner Fabio Fognini, At the time that represented his best showing in a Masters event, although he surpassed that by reaching the semi-finals in Rome last year.

He had not been in good form, leading up to the tournament this year, and had lost his last five matches including first round defeats in Indian Wells and Miami.

But he was able to put that to one side on Tuesday with a comfortable first round defeat of Ilya Ivashka, the world number 44.

One break of serve was enough for the Italian to take the first set, and then he broke again at the start of the second. From there it was just all about consolidating his lead and Ivashka never threatened to make a comeback.

Marrakesh Semi-Finalist Djere

Like Sonego, Djere is a natural clay court player, as he was able to demonstrate last week in Marrakesh, where he reached the semi-finals before going down to the Slovakian Alex Molcan.

That was by far his best performance in what had otherwise been a disappointing year for the Serb so far,

He began his campaign in Monte Carlo against the American qualifier, Maxime Cressy, the world number 69, and, although he advanced in the end, the match was not without its difficulties for him.

Djere began well enough, one break of serve enough to give him the first set.

But after the pair swapped breaks early in the second set, nothing more could separate them before a tie-break which was claimed by the American.

However, two consecutive breaks allowed Djere to reassert control in the third set, and he was able to serve out after that.

Sonego v Djere Prediction and Tip

Sonego has won three out of their previous four matches, all on clay, and he will rate highly his chances of extending that sequence.
