Ekaterina Alexandrova v Zhang Shuai Head to Head
It’s 1-1 from their previous two meetings. Alexandrova won in Toronto and Zhang at the U.S. Open, both in 2019.

After a sluggish start to the season, Ekaterina Alexandrova found form in Charleston earlier this month, reaching the semifinals of the clay court tournament before falling to eventual champion Belinda Bencic.
Alexandrova was 4-6 before Charleston, but four consecutive wins at the WTA 500 tournament improved her season record to 8-7. One of those victories came against World No. 7 Karolina Pliskova, handing her an eighth career top 10 victory.
Better known for her performances on hard courts, the World no. 39 will be happy with a 4-1 start to the clay season and will look to build on that.
Last year, on her debut in Stuttgart, Alexandrova had reached the quarterfinals by defeating Karolina Muchva and Belinda Bencic in the first two rounds, but she lost to Simona Halep in straight sets. How far can she go this year?

Zhang Looking to Replicate Hard Court Form
Zhang Shuai had a great first quarter that saw her win her third career title in Lyon. The 33-year-old comes to Stuttgart with a 12-9 season record.
Since beating Dayana Yastremska in the Lyon final, Zhang exited Indian Wells in the first round, but made it to the Round of 32 in Miami and in Charleston.
The Chinese player doesn’t have a great record on clay, and is yet to win a match in Stuttgart. She was knocked out in the first rounds in 2017 and in 2021.
Last year, Zhang went 1-7 in the first seven clay tournaments that she featured in before making the semifinals at the WTA 250 in Pallermo.
She faces a very tough opener in Stuttgart.
